Washing Statue Wanderlust

She talks to statues. The statue talks back.

And now it wants a beach vacation.

Contemporary Fantasy / Cozy FantasyPublished April 24, 2015

A talking statue. A girl who's never left Tokyo. A beach trip that changes everything. Washing Statue Wanderlust is the oddly beautiful story about finding freedom in the most unexpected friendship.

Yuki has spent her whole life playing it safe — early dinners, strict routines, and a monthly pilgrimage to wash a Buddhist statue she’s been talking to since she was a toddler. The statue, Arai, talks back. And Arai has a request: get me out of here. Bolted to the courtyard of a Tokyo temple and sick of being everyone’s spiritual car wash, the centuries-old Kannon statue wants to see the ocean, feel the sand, and experience the world beyond the endless parade of wet rags and whispered prayers. Yuki — a twenty-one-year-old diabetic college student who’s never left Tokyo — is somehow the only person willing to try.

What starts as an absurd heist attempt (step one: steal a temple statue; step two: flag a taxi) spirals into something much bigger. Yuki’s quest to free Arai forces her to confront the fears that have kept her frozen in place for years — the terror of a glucose spike far from home, the shame of being “the weird one,” and the quiet certainty that she’ll never be normal. But between a best friend who curses out old ladies on her behalf, a sympathetic priest, and a statue with zero chill and a flair for guilt-tripping, Yuki discovers that the courage she’s been praying for was inside her all along. (A beach trip doesn’t hurt either.)

Washing Statue Wanderlust is a warm, weird, and deeply heartfelt story about chronic illness, unlikely friendships, and the radical act of believing — in talking statues, in yourself, and in the idea that the world is worth seeing even when it scares you half to death.
