One of my favorite things about writing a new book is gaining inspiration from photos, illustrations, and videos on the internet and then saving them to my project’s Pinterest board. For SUMMER HAIKUS, I fell down the rabbit hole of photos of Japan. I spent hours looking at images of Kichijōji, where Isa’s family ryokan is and where her grandparents live. For the trip to Asakusa, there were photos and videos of people sightseeing just like Isa and Masa do. There were even photos of Michigan State University I could add to my board!
So I hope you take a moment to cruise over to Pinterest and see what inspired the story of SUMMER HAIKUS.
