CRASH LAND ON KURAI Is Now Available and Teaser Tuesday!

CRASH LAND ON KURAI is now available!! Woo hoo!! It’s Teaser Tuesday again!! Purchase information is below…

Yumi is the most sarcastic character I’ve ever written. Generally, most of my characters have a sarcastic streak, just as I do, but I’ve always kept it toned down. Yumi is the first time I’ve just let it go. Let it ride. Not only is she sarcastic, but her journalistic tone is a delight. She draws upon her big vocabulary and area of expertise to describe situations she comes across. She’s a lot of fun to write! Especially when she tells it like it is, like in this teaser.

Want to order CRASH LAND ON KURAI? You can pick it up for a dollar off the retail price now on Amazon.com! Kindle Unlimited subscribers are now able to borrow the book using the Kindle Unlimited program.

My Publishing Schedule For The Rest Of 2017

Happy Tanabata everyone! Now that we’ve hit the mid-year mark, it’s safe to say that I know what I should be able to publish the rest of the year.

When I started out 2017, I had hoped to bring you 4 books this year. But now, I think there’s a strong possibility I will only be able to publish 3 books this year, with a new book in early January 2018.

The reasons for this change are time, novel length, and money.

Though I’m continuing to write and edit, there are only so many hours in a day, and I get burned out if I spend too much time working. I see tons of authors doing really well, working 12 hours a day or more, and I’m super impressed by them. That was me in 2014 and 2015. I worked really hard but saw very little growth of my business, which left me feeling very depressed in early 2016 and then I didn’t write for six months. I want to avoid that at all costs, so keeping a healthy schedule is really important to me. Since I do the majority of my own edits too, I always have to leave time to whip a manuscript into shape. I wish there were more hours in the day, but there aren’t! 🙂

This is me, working late into the night, with a drink in hand.

Having the time is directly impacted by novel length. I write books on the longer side when compared to the current market. All of my books are 80,000 words or more, and most books I see being published now by my contemporaries are 60,000 words or less (not all but most). Writing longer books takes more time, and like I said above, there are only so many hours in a day. Since I have two established series with books that are longer, I can’t really make subsequent books in those series any shorter without feeling like I’m cheating readers from getting the full story. My goal is to start writing a new series next year that has shorter books in it (40k-50k in length), but right now those novels are just a dream. Hopefully I can get around to them!

And, of course, money. Without going into too many details, I haven’t made much this year. In fact, I haven’t made enough to cover most of my expenses. My husband, the CFO of this organization, is chipping in more money to cover ads and other expenses for my upcoming two books I plan to launch this year, and we’re going to hope that these books make back their investment. I can afford to publish three books a year and take a loss. Four books per year? Not as much.

So, that’s what’s going on with me and what you can expect the rest of the year — the first two books in the Hikoboshi Series. I hope to write much more than that! And maybe next year’s schedule will have more books in it, but I’ll let you know in 2018. 🙂

The Results Of My Reader Survey

Back in late April, I sent a readers survey out to my entire newsletter list, asking them to fill it out, so that I could get an idea of what they wanted or needed out of me for the future. This summer I’ll be switching over to a new newsletter service and I also wanted to make sure that I bring over the engaged and willing subscribers, plus I wanted to give them the ability to greater control when they get emails from me as well.

I took the survey results and I did a 40 minute Facebook Live video with them. I answered a lot of questions and expanded on some of the most popular answers of the survey. I know the video is long, but it’s pretty interesting to see all the results!

People who are new to my list continue to take this survey and I’m sure the results will skew a little bit over time, but this is a good starting point. I may have to do the survey again next year and see the difference!

Anyway, you can see the video now on YouTube and right here on the blog.

If you want me to answer any additional questions, you can put them in the comments below.

SUMMER HAIKUS Is Now Free To Read!

If you’ve always wanted to try out SUMMER HAIKUS and wasn’t sure if you wanted to spend the money on it, now’s your chance to read it for free right here on my website. The whole book (minus one sexy scene) is presented in easy-to-read four chapter installments right on the website. At the end of the book, I only ask for some of your feedback on what I can do differently to make SUMMER HAIKUS more appealing to a wider audience.

I have to admit that this is one of my stronger books. I was just re-reading it this weekend while I was putting together the pages on my website and I was impressed with my writing, all over again. This book came straight from my heart right to the page.

But it has floundered in sales, barely making less than $150 in two years. That doesn’t even cover what I paid for its editing. But I thought, maybe if I let people read it for free, they might love it and tell their friends. Maybe they’ll even buy it. I don’t know. It’s worth a shot.

If you’d like to read SUMMER HAIKUS for free, you can do so over in this special section of my site I set up. I hope you enjoy it.

THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE OPENS A TEA SHOP Is Now Available!

I’m pleased to announce that the third book in my Miso Cozy Mysteries series, THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE OPENS A TEA SHOP, is now available! I really enjoyed writing this book, even though the last third of the book was torture to get through. Lol. I remember that even I wasn’t sure who the killer was until I got to the end! So hopefully you won’t know who it is either. 🙂 (I made sure to drop the right clues in revisions.)

Anyway, if you want to pick up this book, get it for only $2.99 (a dollar off) until March 12th.

I’m now using Books2Read links for all book-linking on my website. It’s some cool technology that connects you to the store of your choice in the right country! Just the other week someone from Australia asked me if I could start using Australian links so this is my compromise.

Hope you all enjoy the book! Writing on the next book in the series starts next week!

Introducing THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE OPENS A TEA SHOP!

If you’re on my mailing list, you already got this information last week! The next book in the Miso Cozy Mysteries Series is on its way! Right now, it’s being read by my trusty team of alpha readers and my critique partner and then it just needs a copy edit, proofread, and then it’s ready to go!

In THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE OPENS A TEA SHOP, things start out really well for Mei and Yasahiro. They’ve worked hard to get Mei’s dream of a tea shop for the elderly up and running. Mei is painting again, helping her mom around the farm, and they’re about to leave on a relief trip to help earthquake victims in the south of Japan. But of course Mei’s luck turns bad and Amanda returns to Yasahiro’s life, ruining pretty much everything.

This was a hard book to write because it really puts my characters through some tough times. The story introduces a few new characters and ushers in a paradigm shift for everyone. I basically turn everything upside down, shake, and see what falls out. While fun, it was also very challenging. Hopefully you all enjoy it.

Mei Yamagawa’s bad luck is almost at an end. Her tea shop is a week away from opening, she and Yasahiro have planned a trip away, and the future is looking bright and hopeful. But when Yasahiro’s ex-fiancée, Amanda, shows up unexpectedly, demanding his time and presence, all of their plans dissolve. Amanda is tough and drives Mei up the wall, so it’s no surprise when Mei tells her to get lost, only for Amanda to be murdered a few hours later. Yasahiro becomes the prime suspect, and Mei must put everything on hold to help free him.

Following Amanda’s past through her digital footprint, Mei uncovers secret lovers, shady business deals, and the biggest secret of all, why Amanda and Yasahiro broke up in the first place. With everyone turning against her and the case under media scrutiny, tracking down the killer becomes an obsession Mei can’t give up. There’s no turning back, though, because solving the murder means getting her life back. Not solving it means losing everything forever.

Want to read the first chapter? Check it out on the THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE OPENS A TEA SHOP page!

I plan for this to be available some time in late February or early March. I AM NOT PUTTING IT UP FOR PREORDER. Something is going wrong at Amazon right now, and I don’t want to get caught in the middle of it. I know at least a dozen people who have been ruined when Amazon either delivered a draft file to their readers OR delivered a kindle file that wouldn’t open. All these people did preorders. Amazon changed the preorder system in November and it hasn’t been the same since then. I’m not chancing it with preorders anymore. 🙁

I promise that once the book is out, you’ll hear about it here and on my mailing list. Please sign up in either place to get the news!

Ozoni And Onsens: A Daydreamer Detective Novella

If you’re a member of my mailing list, you got a surprise this morning in your inbox! (If not, please check your spam!) I’ve been working on this little novella for the Miso Cozy series, and today it went out to just newsletter subscribers! OZONI AND ONSENS is a story that takes place after THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE BRAVES THE WINTER. It’s not a mystery, even though surprising things happen in it, so sit back and enjoy the time, murder-free.

In OZONI AND ONSENS, Mei and Yasahiro try to spend a romantic New Year’s Eve and Day together, but the universe has other plans for them. As you can probably guess, things don’t work out so well! I loved writing this little adventure. It was nice to see Mei just be herself and discover that she has her own talents, even if she doesn’t think they’re spectacular. I hope you enjoy this little story too.
